THIS SECTION WILL BE REWRITTEN SHORTLY
Mulberry House Singings - what we do
Mulberry House Singings are the core of South West Shape Note activities.
In normal times, singers meet in Steve and Martin's home in Cullompton to enjoy singing together songs from the shape-note tradition. This is the opportunity to learn to sing using shaped note heads, to explore the songs in The Sacred Harp and other books, to get to know other singers, have fun, and eat cake!
From March 2020, Covid 19 has prevented us from meeting together to sing. For 2021, initially we still can’t meet as we normally do, so until we can, we shall host the Mulberry House Singings on Zoom.
How Zoom Sacred Harp works
Think of it as Karaoke Sacred Harp! As usual, we each choose a song in turn, then the host (Steve) shares a YouTube recording which we can all see and join in with, but on mute (different line speeds make it impossible to sing together in real time).
If you have not previously used Zoom, but have a pc, laptop or tablet, with sound and, preferably, a front-facing camera, it is really easy to join a Zoom session. We can send some notes in advance on request, or you can simply follow the instructions when you click the link to join a session.
Advantages of singing on Zoom
How to join each event: We will send out reminder by e-mail and Facebook a week before the event. When you see this, let us know you want to join in, and we will email you the link to the session a couple of days beforehand
All singers are welcome, whether you have sung this music before or not. You are welcome if you think you can't sing - everybody can, and we can teach you. There are no auditions, no subs, no regular commitment, no rehearsals or performances. This is community singing, by and for ourselves.
Books
For singing in person - we have loaner copies of all the music we sing, and sales copies of many too
For Zoom singing - sorry, we can't do loaner copies via Zoom, so you may need to buy a book or just listen and enjoy
Third Friday singings take place in the evening of the third Friday of each month (except August).
Fifth Sunday singings are held on the afternoons of the four or five months each year which have a fifth Sunday in them - this varies from year to year.
Please contact Steve and Martin for the address and directions.

Advantages of singing on Zoom
- We can all see each other and have a chat!
- You can choose songs that you might not feel confident to lead, or don’t even know but would like to hear, because we will be singing along with a video filmed at an event in the UK, Europe or US
- If you are new to Sacred Harp singing, this is a good way to experience the sound and try the songs
- The videos will be from larger events than those we host here, so you can enjoy their energy and volume
- If you can’t usually come along to Mulberry House, you can sing on Zoom from any location
